Attractions
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Paintings by Dürer, Rembrandt, Velázquez,
Titian, Rubens and Brueghel (with a major exhibition of the latter running through April
14). It also has Greek, Egyptian and Roman art and artifacts.
Imperial Palace, Vienna. Originally a medieval castle, the palace was the home
of the Habsburg emperors until 1918 and now houses the offices of the Austrian president.
The Vienna Boys' Choir (celebrating their 500th year) sings mass in its chapel and the
Lippizaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School perform here.
Jewish Museum, Vienna. In a building dating to the Middle Ages, the museum
houses the Judaica collection compiled by Max Berger, as well as temporary exhibitions.
KunstHausWien, Vienna. Modern works by Hundertwasser and others, and
architectural and cultural exhibits.
Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum, Innsbruck. Exhibit of traditional costumes, Christmas
crches, Tyrolean living rooms since Gothic days, folk art and masks.
Hellbrunn Palace, Salzburg. This 17th-century palace built for the city's
prince-bishops features trick fountains (which spray unsuspecting visitors) and impressive
statuary.
Abbey of Melk. This splendid Benedictine monastery towers over the Danube 40
miles from Vienna. A Baroque masterpiece, it occupies the site of a 10th-century fortress.
Ars Electronica, Linz. A museum of the future, with five levels of 21st-century
technology.
Armory of Styria, Graz. A repository of 30,000 items of 15th- to 17th-century
arms and armor, the largest such collection in Europe.
Something Special
Internationally renowned artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser's new Rogner-Bad Blumau
Hotel, about 90 miles from Vienna in the rolling hillsides of Styria, is a continental spa
in a fairy-tale setting. Onion-dome-topped towers sit on brightly painted, multi-colored
structures built into the contour of the hill. There are more than 500 rooms and 24
apartments, as well as three hot springs, Roman and Turkish baths, Finnish saunas, full
spa and holistic treatments, and such sports as tennis, riding and golf. Daily rates start
at around $120.
