McLean's Town Conch Cracking Contest

McLean's Town, Grand Bahama Island, comes alive as people flock to this sleepy settlement to see who will be crowned "Best Conch Cracker" at the 30th Annual Conch Cracking Contest & Fair, held on Hero's Day (formerly Discovery or Columbus Day) in October.

Trophies and prizes are awarded for the "Conch Eating" and "Conch Cracking" contests in the following categories:

  • Male National Champion
  • Female National Champion
  • Media/Business
  • Visitor
  • Junior Championship
  • Beginner's Championship

The Royal Bahamas Police Force Band kicks off the Fair at 10:00 a.m. with local music provided by a D.J. thoughout the day.

Cultural events and activities include Plaiting of the Maypole, climbing the greasy pole, ribbon drill, Junkanoo rush-out, three- legged race, needle & thread sack races, Konkathalon, spoon & egg races, Domino games, tug-o-war, egg toss, Bingo and other assorted games, a swimming contest and boat tours to nearby cays and blue holes.
