In 1965, a group called the Underwater Explorers Society established itself on Grand Bahama and began building what Skin Diver Magazine has called "The most sophisticated and best equipped dive facility in the world." The full-service UNEXSO compound has pumps and compressors, deepwater tanks for dive instruction, and state-of-the-art dive boats. Best of all, it offers guided encounters with free-roaming dolphins and sharks. For anyone who has ever dreamed of getting close to either of these magnificent creatures, a visit to UNEXSO is a once-in-a-lifetime experience (or maybe twice, if you come back).

Dolphin Diving

Probably the most extraordinary aspect of UNEXSO's 13 dolphins is that they are free to come and go. They live in pens at the UNEXSO facility, but are released into the open sea several times a week to rendevous with divers at a nearby reef for the "Dolphin Dive" experience. If they wanted, the dolphins could simply swim off and never return. This has never happened.

Dolphin Diving

UNEXSO also offers Dolphin Diving, a unique scuba enocunter.  Every day, divers meet up with dolphins from The Dolphin Experience, about a mile offshore on the 45-foot deep coral reef, and have the opportunity to interact with them in the open ocean.  This remarkable experience is a safe and educational way to interact with dolphins in the open ocean, without disturbing wild populations.  When this dive is over, the dolphins return to their home in Sanctuary Bay!  Great photo opportunities abound, both on the surface and underwater.  For non-divers, there are other interactive programs available at The Dolphin Experience

Shark Diving

SCUBA diving enthusiasts often dream of diving with sharks in open ocean - unfortunately, sharks are generally very shy animals. On he UNEXSO "Shark Junction Dive," however, you are guaranteed to an  "up close and personal" encounter with Caribbean reef sharks. Divers swim with the sharks and watch as a chain mail clad guide feeds these awesome creatures. For the truly daring, UNEXSO offers a four day "Feeder Program" that trains experienced divers to feed the sharks themselves.
