DAY AND NIGHT, the early settlers of Grand Bahama watched the sea, lulled by the endless heaving of its surface and the wide question floating in the horizon...what will you bring us? There were many days when nothing would appear, and on those days the people would fish or scour the shallows for conch, or tend to the small plots of land behind their houses. Even when they weren't looking, they were wondering, because it was only a matter of time before a ship would come. The sailing ships passing between Europe and the New World were as regular as the tides, and it had been that way since the time of Columbus. It was only a matter of time.   continue
